Press release -

PEMA and the future of container weighing

The Port Equipment Manufacturers Association, (PEMA), the global industry body for port equipment and technology, has, through its Safety & Environment Committee, and together with ICHCA International, other NGOs and regulatory bodies, taken a pro-active role in the debate surrounding the upcoming legislation on container weighing due to enter into force on July 1, 2016.

“We are committed to providing information on the best recommendations and practices to reduce the incidence of mis-declared and overweight containers; and as PEMA we bring the equipment manufacturers’ voice to the table,” says Ottonel Popesco, President of PEMA.

In 2013, PEMA published an Information Paper on this topic entitled Weighing Containers in Ports and Terminals. This provides ports, terminal operators, and other interested parties with information about port-based container weighing technologies and systems that are currently available, and their relative capabilities to accurately verify container weights.

“The correct declaration of container weight is a critical issue for the shipping industry and one that is occupying many of our members’ attention,” says Lars Meurling, Chairman of the PEMA Safety & Environment committee.

“We will continue to act as an active partner to all bodies interested in developing a workable and realistic solution for the terminal operators,” he continues.

The Weighing Containers in Ports and Terminals Information Paper covers both weighbridges and weighing systems for use on various container handling equipment, including ship-to-shore container cranes, mobile harbour cranes, RTGs, RMGs, straddle carriers, reach stackers, and container handling forklift trucks.
